Which defender Archetype should you pick in FC 26?
Four Archetypes covering everything from the centre-back who steps out to the full-back who lives ahead of the ball. Plus what defenders really record.
Measured hereUpdated 11 August 2026
Four, ranging from the centre-back who steps out to the full-back who spends the match ahead of the ball.
The defender Archetypes
| Archetype | Fourth PlayStyle |
|---|---|
| Progressor | Intercept |
| Boss | Anticipate |
| Engine | Rapid |
| Marauder | Trickster |
Names and PlayStyles are EA’s. Which Archetype belongs to which position is read from the order EA lists them in — see the full list for what is confirmed and what is inferred.
What each one actually produces
Measured across 144 archived defenders. EA stamps the build on every match row it returns, so none of this is inferred from a shirt number — and the four turn out to differ on one axis rather than on quality.
| Archetype | Goals / 90 | Assists / 90 | Rating | Players |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boss | 0.10 | 0.04 | 7.3 | 59 |
| Progressor | 0.07 | 0.12 | 7.4 | 30 |
| Marauder | 0.02 | 0.05 | 7.3 | 30 |
| Engine | 0.08 | 0.05 | 7.5 | 25 |
Weighted by how many players actually use each build. Builds with fewer than 20 archived players are left out rather than printed thin.
The split is in the assists, not the goals
All four score at nearly the same rate: 0.10 per 90 for Boss down to 0.02 for Marauder, a spread of 0.07. A defender worrying about which build scores more is optimising a difference that is not there.
Assists are where they part. Progressor sets up 0.12 per 90, and the axis runs from the builds that step out to the one that stays. That is a statement about where you are asked to stand, not about who is better — Boss is the most picked of the four at 59 players, and the group rates 7.4 whichever way you go.
So pick by where you want the ball. If you want to be involved in build-up, take a build that produces assists and expect your goals to stay where they are; if you want to defend, the scoring column costs you nothing.
Questions people ask
- How many defender Archetypes are in FC 26?
- Four: Progressor, Boss, Engine and Marauder, with Intercept, Anticipate, Rapid and Trickster as their fourth Signature PlayStyles.
- How many goals should a defender score in Pro Clubs?
- Far fewer than people assume. Measured across archived players, defenders average a small fraction of a goal per 90 — a centre-back scoring at a striker’s rate is not the benchmark to hold yourself to.
- Which defender Archetype is best?
- EA publishes no performance data by Archetype, but the match rows now carry the build, so the ordering by win rate is measurable and it is in the Archetype tier list. Read it as a ranking of roles rather than of quality: a win rate belongs to eleven people, and nobody picks their team-mates.
