Which Archetype should you play at CDM in FC 26?
Six builds carry CDM on their Suggested Positions screen. Four came out of the defender group and two out of midfield, and that split is the whole decision.

Four of the six come out of EA’s defender group and two come out of midfield. Same shirt, two completely different ideas of what the person wearing it is for.
Six builds, from two groups
CDM turns up on six Suggested Positions screens, which is the second widest choice on the pitch. It is also the only slot where a build drawn for a full back stands beside a build drawn for a passer. Progressor and Boss are the centre-half builds. Engine and Marauder are the ones with the running in them, and both list four other positions as well.
| Archetype | Group | Signature PlayStyle |
|---|---|---|
| Progressor | Defender | Intercept |
| Boss | Defender | Anticipate |
| Engine | Defender | Rapid |
| Marauder | Defender | Trickster |
| Recycler | Midfielder | Tiki Taka |
| Maestro | Midfielder | Incisive |
Groups, names and PlayStyles come off EA’s own screens. Which id belongs to which build is read from the order EA lists them in, and the full list separates what is confirmed from what is inferred.
What they give you going forward
Recycler sits bottom of the pool on 0.08 goals and assists per 90. Maestro tops it on 0.53. Both are on EA’s list for the same slot, so the pool spans most of the outfield range on its own.
| Archetype | Goals / 90 | Assists / 90 | Rating | Players |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maestro | 0.19 | 0.34 | 7.7 | 55 |
| Progressor | 0.07 | 0.12 | 7.4 | 30 |
| Boss | 0.10 | 0.04 | 7.3 | 59 |
| Engine | 0.08 | 0.05 | 7.5 | 25 |
| Marauder | 0.02 | 0.05 | 7.3 | 30 |
| Recycler | 0.03 | 0.05 | 7.6 | 32 |
EA stamps the build on every match row and this archive keeps it. It never says the ninety minutes were spent at CDM, so read every line as what the build produces wherever its players stood.
The half of the job nobody screenshots
Goals and assists are the wrong table for this position, and they are the only table most pages give you. Tackles and interceptions are the job. Here is the middle of each build’s own distribution on both.
None of the six has a hundred archived players yet, which is the floor for a distribution worth printing.
A tackle count is the most misread figure in this position. The archive median across everybody is 1.16 a game, and standing in front of the back four puts the ball near you more often, so the number climbs with where you stand as much as with how well you defend. Success rate is the read that survives moving position, and it has its own page.
Where the published numbers stop
Search for a CDM build and you get attribute allocations to the point. How much defensive awareness Boss adds, what Engine does to stamina, which one hits the pace cap. EA has published none of that. It reaches no match row and no season row, so the tables printing it are quoting each other.
Pick by what your club keeps conceding
Watch three matches before you choose. If the second goal every night comes from a ball played through the middle, the two centre-half builds are on EA’s list for a reason and one of them belongs there. If your defence keeps the ball and then loses it going forward, the two passing builds are the ones with the assist figures above.
Nothing about the choice is permanent. The guide on changing your Archetype has the menu path, and it takes under a minute.
Questions people ask
- How many Archetypes can play CDM in FC 26?
- Six of the thirteen: Progressor, Boss, Engine, Marauder, Recycler and Maestro. Only CAM has a wider pool, and no other slot mixes defender builds with midfield builds this evenly.
- How many tackles a game should a CDM make?
- The median archived player makes 1.16 per 90 and 2.20 is the top tenth. A holding midfielder is picked to clear the first of those, because the ball passes through that area more often than any other.
- Which CDM Archetype covers the most ground?
- EA publishes no stamina figure for any build, so nothing measurable answers that. Engine carries the Rapid PlayStyle and lists eight positions, which is EA saying it expects the build to be everywhere.
- Is Recycler the best CDM in FC 26?
- It is the quietest build in the pool going forward, and the archive puts Recycler bottom of it on 0.08 goals and assists per 90. Low output at CDM is the job description, so read that as fit and not as failure.
- Do the CDM Archetypes change your attributes?
- EA has published no attribute allocation for any of the thirteen, and none of it reaches a match row. Any page listing exact defending or physical numbers per build is repeating somebody else’s guess.
